When I hear this original 1999 version of "Living With Me" it makes me excited, I always smile and enjoy the pure fun of making this recording.
Equal parts Stones, Faces, Westerberg, and Johnny Thunders, fans of any of these artists will be rockin' to the loose swagger, chaos, and crackle found here.
This started out as a guitar 'n voice demo sung on a pocket cassette recorder at my dining table in Hollywood around 1998 or '99.
I loved the sound of my Gibson acoustic guitar when I'd be strumming in that dining room at home, and it permeated the cassette tape in a way that I couldn't recapture using a proper recording set up when I took this recording into the studio to finish it.
This is one of the very first recordings I'd done completely on my own, running all the mics and wires and engineering the board, all trial-and-error style, onto the 16 track 1/2 inch tape. I'd press record in the control room and have to run into the other room to play the drums and piano parts before the down beat of the song started!
That's me bashing away out of time on the drums and fouling up the bass lines, slammin' the keys on the old bar room piano and bending the Telecaster strings into oblivion. I tried to do my best soul-singer back up vocals too, which is a complete mess, and I loved it!
This song would go on to be recorded/released twice more...
(This version of "LIVING WITH ME" is the original version and was recorded in 1999, and released in 2008 on the 'Hollylake & Silverwood' album by HUTCH.)
lyrics
What’cha trying to prove now,
Well I can’t move out
Got nowhere to stay
I can’t call on my friends now
Cause they’re all out of town
When life gets this way
You keep on pushing, and I can’t take it,
Why can’t you love me just the way I am?
Living with me is such a drag,
Since I found out
That living with you is driving me mad,
Yeah, let’s work it out.
So I go to the schoolyard
Where nothing peculiar
Can get in my way.
A place with no surprises,
Well that’s how I like it
When I’m running away.
You’re wanna change me
And I can’t take it,
Why can’t you love me
For who I am?
Living with me is such a drag,
Since I found out
That living with you is driving me mad,
Let’s work it out
Living with me is such a drag,
Since I found out
That living with you is driving me mad,
Ohhh work it now!
Guitar solo
Living with me is such a drag,
Since I found out
That living with you is driving me
C’mon, let’s work it out
I said now living with me is such a drag,
Well how ‘bout living with you?
Because now living with you is driving me mad,
Oh, let’s work it out.
I’m gonna give a little bit,
Said if I could get a little bit.
Yeah.
Yeah, Yeah
Yeah, Yeah

I saw Alvvays open for CourtneyBarnett 2016 'n checked out this album that week on Spotify, made me a fan for life. They make brilliant records if you ask me. Great vocals, songs, guitar parts. Joe Normal
The original release without the last two tracks. Sloan is hecka-talented, I'd say he's the next Paul McCartney. I'm grateful to find a young artist/producer so inspiring, good natured, and melodic. Joe Normal
If Dayglow's the youthful side of my inspiration, Martin Newell's the older hero that pushes me on, to stay prolific 'n that 'every dog has his day.' I wish him good health, abundance, and much love. Joe Normal
