(back catalog) OVER THE SEA AND UNIVERSE

about

This is a back catalog release.

I'm not sure where this song came from. I remember starting out with a guitar tuning and coming up with the descending chord progression. I'm guessing the rest of the song came together in the recording process.

It has an other-worldly dark George Harrison-esque loveliness with a bit of Queen "She Makes Me" about it. I learned about guitar tunings listening to Jimmy Page and Led Zep records, so I suppose there's a "Kashmir" or "Bron-Yr-Aur" influence in there somewhere, too.

Lyrically I was reflecting on my sadness over lost years, trying to find some hope or some positive angle to carry on while I was unsure about where I was going in life since my brother and I ceased as musical partners after 20 years and stopped playing together as The Hutchinsons the year prior.

Near the end of the song there's a moment of backwards violins or flutes that mysteriously appeared in the mix, some magical leftover audio that didn't get erased from the previous owner. I left it in because I thought it was so cool! (We used to buy used 1/2 inch tape for $10 or $20 a reel at Ametron Audio in Hollywood back in the 90's, assuming that the reels were blank or properly erased. Not so in this case!)

(originally recorded in 1999 "Over The Sea And Universe" was released in 2005 on the HUTCH Extended EP on CD and Digitally.)

lyrics

Where has my life gone?
Where has the time flown?

Over the sea and universe.
Over the sea and universe.

What is my life’s curse?
Trapped in by my words.

Over my head and out of reach,
Are words that I’ve bred in angered speech.

Where has the time gone?
Where is my life going?

Over the sea and universe.
Over the sea and universe.
Over the sea and universe.
Over the sea and universe.
