about

This is a back catalog release.

Here's a folky, Dylan inspired song about longing for home and the love that was left behind in the pursuit of dreams.

One morning when I was going into my high school I spotted a man hanging from a tree across the road by the bank of our Elizabeth River. I told the lady in the principal's office and they called the cops. A bunch of friends and I stood outside the school and watched them cut the man down from the tree, and I'll never forgot how his body landed on its feet for a few moments before collapsing to the ground, quite hard.

Later we'd heard he had on him a love note to a girl who broke his heart. The poor guy hung himself over a girl. How devastating. How f**ked up. How romantic.

My song's first verse is informed by this very scene, and though my lyrical message sounds of innocent times kicking-back by the river, the story is about sadness and longing for something you can't get back. It's too late to undo the choices we made that took us away. Took us away from life, home, and love.

(originally appeared on the "Just Another Folkin' Son of a HUTCH" album, released in 2006 on CD and digital.)

lyrics

Take me back to the river
Where I once played
Take me back,
I promise to stay.

I never wanted to leave,
But my life led me away,
Hanging by the river
Is what I need today.

Take me back to the cellar
Where I once got laid,
Take me back and I’ll tell her
“I said I would come back someday.”

I never wanted to leave ya,
But my life led me astray,
And hanging ‘round your basement
Is what I need today.
Lying ‘round your basement
Is what I need today.

Take me back won’t ya baby?
I promise to stay,
Take me back and we’ll marry,
Together always

I never wanted to leave,
But my dreams led me away,
And standing on the altar
Is was I need today.
Standing on the altar
I what I need today.

Take me back.
Take me back.
