I'm a fan of 50's Rock n Roll and Rockabilly, especially Buddy Holly and early Gene Vincent. When I wrote "Valentine" I was secretly crushing hard on someone, and it was in my heart that I needed to get this song out of my chest. I was aware that as I was writing it it could or hopefully would be a wedding song or a Valentine's Day song.
If I remember correctly this one practically wrote itself, quite easily and quickly. It started out closer to a Beatles or John Lennon sounding song, which is my natural writing style, but I wanted to produce it more like a big 1950's prom slow-dance tune, with a big sexy saxophone like Buddy Holly's "True Love Ways," which incidentally Gigi and I slow danced to at our own wedding.
This recording started with a simple vocal 'n guitar demo that I brought to my brother Jimmy's studio. I tracked the drums, electric guitar and keys. Unfortunately I don't recall the names of the upright bass player and the original vocal n guitar demo recorders.

lyrics
You are the other half of the pie,
In my eye, in my eye.
You are the bluer half of the sky,
In my mind, in my mind... Oh oh oh oh
When you're sitting next to me,
And you're reaching into me,
I'm such a lucky man.
You are the reason why...
Valentine
You are the reason why...
Valentine
You are the brightest star in the sky
When you smile, when you smile
You shine the brightest, don't ya know why?
Ya got style, ya got style... oh, oh, oh, oh
When you're whispering to me,
And you're dreaming includes me,
I'm such a lucky man
You are the reason why...
Valentine
You are the reason why...
Valentine
Valentine
Valentine...
Valentine
You are the light and love of my life
For all time... for all time
And you look just like heaven tonight!
So divine, so divine... oh, oh, oh, oh
When you're lyin' next to me,
You'll just have to excuse me,
I'm such a grateful man
You are the reason why...
Valentine
You are the reason why...
Valentine

I saw Alvvays open for CourtneyBarnett 2016 'n checked out this album that week on Spotify, made me a fan for life. They make brilliant records if you ask me. Great vocals, songs, guitar parts. Joe Normal
The original release without the last two tracks. Sloan is hecka-talented, I'd say he's the next Paul McCartney. I'm grateful to find a young artist/producer so inspiring, good natured, and melodic. Joe Normal
If Dayglow's the youthful side of my inspiration, Martin Newell's the older hero that pushes me on, to stay prolific 'n that 'every dog has his day.' I wish him good health, abundance, and much love. Joe Normal
