The great singer songwriters of the 1970's like Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot, and Paul Simon (with and without Art Garfunkel), had a profound influence on my own songwriting and storytelling.
Here I tell the story of a fashionable city gal, a woman so exotic and breathtakingly beautiful she commands the attention of every man and passer by. Yet in the end we learn she is hopelessly alone and is so desperate for true love, she resorts to scrolling through the personal ads for the love that evades her.
The original title of this love song was Twin Towers, which in my lyrics is a metaphor I used to describe the sexy, high 'n mighty long legs of the beauty in my story, standing tall and standing out above all the rest.
I had written this song in the mid to late 90's, but by the time I got around to recording this in the 2000's, well, you can understand why I decided to change the title to the less evocative "Save Her For Me."
(originally appeared on the "Just Another Folkin' Son of a HUTCH" album, released in 2006 on CD and digital.)
lyrics
Saturday morning, she’s up
She does her hair, nails, and makeup
Cool summer dress in the park
And the sun is shining.
The Twin Towers they say
Her legs rivaled that day,
Cutting through a baseball game
And the players start cheering.
She’s the one with the almond hair
That captures the sunlight
And the men’s stares.
Yeah, she’s the one who could never be lonely
But save her please only
For me.
On a grassy hill serene
I hear her sigh on the breeze,
I stop to bend and pick it up
And carry it back to her.
All the traffic in midtown
Rushing, could not keep me down,
All the bridges and skyscrapers
Kneeling at her feet.
She’s the one with the mirror-like stare
Reflecting impressions tossed in the air
Yeah, she’s the one who could never be lonely,
But save her please only
For me.
Yeah, she’s the one who should never be lonely
But save her please only
For me.
Oh, oh, oh… Save her for me.
Then on Sunday morning she’s up
With her paper and coffee cup
Looking through the personals
And laughing at herself.
I never thought she’d be compared
To all the lonely people out there,
But somehow in her world of fear
It all seems so clear.
She’s the one with the intimate fear
Independent, attractive,
Sometimes nose in the air.
Yeah, she’s the one who’s surprisingly lonely
God if she only knew me.
Oh… ohhh.

I saw Alvvays open for CourtneyBarnett 2016 'n checked out this album that week on Spotify, made me a fan for life. They make brilliant records if you ask me. Great vocals, songs, guitar parts. Joe Normal
The original release without the last two tracks. Sloan is hecka-talented, I'd say he's the next Paul McCartney. I'm grateful to find a young artist/producer so inspiring, good natured, and melodic. Joe Normal
If Dayglow's the youthful side of my inspiration, Martin Newell's the older hero that pushes me on, to stay prolific 'n that 'every dog has his day.' I wish him good health, abundance, and much love. Joe Normal
